Friday's homework assignment

1. What did you learn today that surprised you?
  • For me today there were 2 things very surprisingly for me. The first thing is that the Amish fathers had to go to prison because they didn't send their kids to high school. I don't think this should be punished, especially not with prison time. But thank God their believes got excepted and the fathers don't have to go to prison. The second thing that surprised me was how much power women actually have. I mean of course it is not the freedom 'English' women have but still they have their own voice in the church and even though the man is the head of the family the woman can face many decision on her own. 

2. Which source of information did you find most interesting?  Why?
  • The movie was most interesting for me. Mostly because of the former Amish people who told their stories or how their lives had been before they left. But I also got to know the shooting from October 2006 which I have never heard of. That such a horrible happend to this girls and their families is just awful. But I really admire them on their forgiveness against the murders families. What also helped me a lot in understanding everything a little bit more were the experts (sociologists and anthropologist) who explained why the Amish have done things in a special way.


3. What do you hope to learn on tomorrow's trips?
  • To be honest: nothing special. I just wanna learn everything there is and they can tell me. Tomorrow I will probably have 100 of questions but right know I just can't think of something specific. I just know that I wanna know everything, especially that stuff I couldn't even think of.

1. Which moment from today do you think you will particularly remember?  Why? When I spoke with an Amish man who were selling jam and marmelade. He was talking in Pennsylvanian Dutch to me and I could understand the most of it. Even when I talked to him in german he understood most of it. Since I know about the Amish that was my dream to hear an Amish speaking Pennsylvanian Dutch with me. And that I could undertstand mostly everything made this experience a lot better and more exciting and unforgettable. 2. What sounds, smells, or sights come to mind when you think of today's trips? The shop we went to during our bus tour smelled very strong and for me really bad. But even though the shop hadn't a nice smell it was very impressive to see all the furniture the Amish had built. The quality was amazingly good and I would live here for longer and move into my own appartment I would definitely buy these furniture. 3. What surprised you about today's experiences? Why? ...

Questions 1-5

Hello! In this post I will answer the questions 1-5 we got for our homework.    1. What is something that surprised you about the descriptions of Amish beliefs and lifestyle descriptions?    For me as a german person it surprised me how much of the german language is still present. Most words like 'Ordnung' or 'Gelassenheit' are german and even 'rumspringa' is from the bavarian or austrian dialect I think. It also suprised me that even if it is very difficult there is a way for outsiders to become an Amish. The number of children they usually get was unexpectedly high. I knew their way of living and beliefs before I read the text so that wasn't a surprise for me.             What is something you would like to know more about? I would like to know more about their language. If I could understand them and if they would understand me if I speak german to them.   2. What is something that you learned about downtown...

Question 6-10

6. Have you ever used Uber?    Yes, I did. And I was always happy with it.        How does that shape your impression of Source 3b?  To be honest I don't see a connection between this question and source 3b. I think it might be a mistake and it is connected to source 3c. In that case I think it is a great idea! You can ask the Amish man whatever you want and learn a lot more about their culture. And it is a great attraction, too.        Do you think you would take an Amish Uber if you had the chance? I would definitely do it. First because I might never get the chance again to ride in a buggy. Second because I can meet an Amish and talk to him easily. 7.
