Saturday's reflection questions

1. Which moment from today do you think you will particularly remember?  Why?
  • When I spoke with an Amish man who were selling jam and marmelade. He was talking in Pennsylvanian Dutch to me and I could understand the most of it. Even when I talked to him in german he understood most of it. Since I know about the Amish that was my dream to hear an Amish speaking Pennsylvanian Dutch with me. And that I could undertstand mostly everything made this experience a lot better and more exciting and unforgettable.

2. What sounds, smells, or sights come to mind when you think of today's trips?
  • The shop we went to during our bus tour smelled very strong and for me really bad. But even though the shop hadn't a nice smell it was very impressive to see all the furniture the Amish had built. The quality was amazingly good and I would live here for longer and move into my own appartment I would definitely buy these furniture.

3. What surprised you about today's experiences? Why?
  • It surprised me a lot how expensive the Buggies are. Also that every boy gets one on their 16th birthday was a suprise because that is super expensive! Imagine you have 5 sons and the cheapest Buggie cost $ 5000. Even though they don't get new Buggies it is still a big amount of money.

4. When did you feel most comfortable?  When did you feel most uncomfortable?
  • I felt most comfortable talking to the Amish man because it was nice to talk to a stranger in your mother language. Espescially because now I only speak to other au pairs in german. And it was a dream coming true for me.
  • I felt most uncomfortable during the house tour we had in a copy of an Amish house. For me the woman who was telling us things about the Amish was very unpleasant and not very nice or kind. She seemed bored and the sentence "I'm tired of talking now" let me feel really uncomfortable and unwanted.

5. What do you imagine tomorrow's Amish Mennonite church service will be like?
  • To be honest I have absolutely no idea how it's gonna be tomorrow. I think there are gonna be a lot of people but everything else will be a surprise for me. But that's kind of nice, too.

6. What questions do you have?
  • I would like to know where their boundries are. Espescially because they have cars and cellphones so they use modern technology I would like to know where it ends and what is prohibited.
